Please note that any legal information is not comprehensive and may be outdated.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE MY CRANES INSPECTED?

The short answer is yes. OSHA requirements include ‘frequent’, or ‘periodic’ inspections on a regular basis. OSHA’s standards incorporate or reference standards from ASME, NEC, and ANSI among other leading industry organizations. These inspections protect business owners from liability in the event of an accident or equipment failure. It’s imperative these inspections be carried out according to schedule and by a qualified personnel.

HOW OFTEN ARE INSPECTIONS REQUIRED?

OSHA 1910.179 contains two categories of crane system inspections: frequent and periodic.

Frequent inspections need to be performed either daily or monthly depending on the task. Frequent inspections will include checking hooks, hoist chains, wire ropes, and all other functional operating mechanisms every single day, and will generally be performed by the operator.

Periodic Inspections are carried out either monthly, semi annually, or annually, depending on the task. There is a normal service periodic inspection required annually, a heavy service inspection performed semi annually, and a severe service quarterly.
