Physics tells us that two or more things cannot occupy the same space
at the same time. This rule applies to excavator buckets and trench boxes, boulder & ledge. 
 

A trench box is not a knife. It cannot displace the earth.

However it is obvious, based on the damaged trench boxes that sometimes come back
from rental, that many machine operators don't understand this simple concept. Take a
look at some of the unbelievable operator-caused damage we have seen over the years.

You must undermine panel before pushing it down. Dig it out
completely to make space for box.
